You and your Renault car or van are welcome to visit Harts Renault for a free brake safety check at any time if you are concerned with your Renault car or van brakes or braking performance.

Harts Renault make a visual check of your brake discs and pads every time your Renault car or van comes to our workshop for servicing, MOT, repair, warranty or diagnostic work. On a service we also measure the actual thickness of the brake disc and brake pads and compare that to the Renault minimum thickness standard to advise you on wear and replacement interval to keep you safe on the road. We also check the condition of your brake fluid and for any leaks from a brake hoses, and condition of handbrake cables – all for your peace of mind.

BRAKE DISCS

A metal brake disc (made from cast iron) is mounted on the wheel hub, when the brake pedal is pressed the disc is clamped on both sides by two brake pads which are housed in brake callipers.

Brake discs are wearing parts, so need to be checked for thickness and surface condition. and are generally replaced every second or third time the brake pads are replaced, but can be damaged by worn out brake pads. Brake discs are always replaced in pairs to provide equal stopping performance on both sides of your vehicle. Brake pads must always be changed when brake discs are replaced to ensure a good “bite” – as brake pads will be worn or grooved by the previous set of brake discs, which is why Harts Renault have a fixed price offer for brake pads and discs.

BRAKE PADS

Brake pads are in direct contact with the brake discs and during braking the brake pad may reach temperatures of more than 800°C. Their quality is therefore essential, so always choose genuine Renault brake pads and discs fitted by Harts Renault

Renault approved brake pads can resist high temperatures, and give a good “bite” on the brake disc which ultimately slows and stops your car or loaded van. How long a brake pad lasts depends on the type of vehicle, the type of journeys made and the driving style. Brake pads must therefore be checked regularly. Renault vans and cars are always welcome at Harts Renault for a free brake check – while you use our wi-fi and enjoy a tea or coffee.

DRUM BRAKES

Drum brakes are generally mounted on the rear wheels. When the driver presses the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure is applied to the pistons in the wheel cylinders. The rear brake drums wear with the friction applied by the shoes, so that they end up scored or gouged, but generally they can be rectified. Drum are fitted to some Twingo and Clio models.
