The Discovery Sport PHEV from Land Rover is a smart, comfortable and upmarket family SUV. It combines a small but powerful 1.5 three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a smooth 8-speed automatic gearbox with four-wheel drive provided through the electric motor on the rear axle. The really appealing part is the plug-in hybrid system. When charged, it can cover roughly 30–38 miles on electric power depending on conditions and specification, making it particularly suited to shorter daily journeys and charging can be done via a 7kW home wallbox while a normal 3 pin socket can be used but that takes considerably longer. Inside, the HSE feels particularly luxurious, with leather upholstery, heated electrically adjustable seats, a powered tailgate, Sat Nav and a large infotainment screen. The driving position is high and commanding, while the cabin is spacious and comfortable for a family. The boot is generous and the rear seats can be adjusted to prioritise passenger or luggage space.
